The good thing about Yuri's Revenge is that it is not an expansion pack in the traditional sense. Instead, it builds on top of Red Alert 2's foundation to create a completely new experience. The bad thing about Yuri's Revenge is that if you don't have Red Alert 2 then you cannot play this game. Tired of being at the mercy of your feeble computer opponents? Yuri’s Revenge offers an AI-enhanced skirmish mode with 10 levels, including five levels for non-Soviet forces and five for Soviet forces. Skirmish lets players have it out against other human opponents, or if they’re feeling lucky they can take on the computer AI. A new event system allows players to customize Yuri's Revenge by creating their own maps, scenarios, and events. There are nine maps total, six maps for Soviet forces and three maps for Allied forces. Each map has its own set of rules for victory conditions, including the ability to control all cities at the end of the game. The Allied and Soviet player scenarios also let you fight in either World War II or in a modern war. The new faces in Yuri's Revenge isn't just a pretty face (well not really). The following Soviet heroes get a makeover: the Tunguska, the BTR-60, and the V3S get new skins. The Soviets' new units include: The Allies' new units include: The expansion features a new set of sound effects and music tracks. It also contains beginner and advanced tutorials for both Allied and Soviet forces. Also, in addition to reworked models for all units and buildings, the mod introduces a brand new feature called "Hacking". This feature comes in handy when you want to take control of an unguarded airbase or when you want to show your superior force to your opponent who doesn't see it otherwise. This pack adds a lot to the original Red Alert 2. The new units and buildings help mix up the multiplayer experience quite a bit, and since Yuri's Revenge is free, anybody who has an interest in RTS games should try this mod at least once. The campaigns aren't as innovative as what you would find in a retail expansion pack, but they are still fun nonetheless. The same goes for the new AI skirmish maps. If you liked what you saw in Red Alert 2, then Yuri's Revenge will only make you like it more. The mod was originally created by the team at GameSpite. They currently maintain a version of the mod which works on Shockwave.com. "Yuri's Revenge" received positive reviews from critics, with an aggregate score of 89% on GameRankings and 83/100 on Metacritic. IGN said Yuri's Revenge "contains a huge amount of innovation and fresh content that gamers who have been playing for a long time will appreciate as well as those interested in trying something new." Computer Gaming World gave it 4 stars out of 5 praising its new features, but complained that the "basic gameplay hasn't changed..."
